November 11th is the first of 3 set dates where secondary students can move between remote and in-person learning. Facilitating these moves is a complex process; please consider any moves carefully.

Should you choose to have your child move from their current mode of delivery follow these steps:

  1. Have a conversation with the school principal about the concerns you have with your child(ren)’s current situation and the reasons for wanting a change. Schools will work to provide solutions to concerns and barriers.
  2. If, after those discussions, you still feel a change is preferred, speak to your school principal directly to request the change. These requests must be made between 9:30AM October 19th and 4PM on October 23rd. We are not able to honour requests made after October 23rd due to the impact of staffing changes in the system.
  3. The principal will document the request, and during the week of Nov 2nd new staffing and timetabling will occur.
  4. Your child will be contacted by their guidance counsellor to arrange the new timetable.

Any questions can be addressed to your school principal or vice-principal.

October 13 is the first of 3 set dates where Elementary students can move between remote and in-person learning. Facilitating these moves is a complex process – class and school sizes must be assessed to determine if staff need to move classes or schools in order to maintain appropriate class sizes. Please consider any moves carefully and be sure to have discussions with your child(ren)’s teacher(s) regarding potential moves.

Should you choose to have your child move from their current school “location” follow these steps:

  1. Have a conversation with the teacher/ECE and school principal about the concerns you have with your child(ren)’s current situation and the reasons for wanting a change. Schools will work to provide solutions to concerns and barriers.
  2. If, after those discussions, you still feel a change is preferred, contact your school principal directly to request the change. These requests must be made between 9 AM September 25 and 4 PM on October 2. We are not able to honour requests made after October 2nd due to the impact of staffing changes in the system.
  3. The principal will document the request, and during the week of October 5th, new class lists and school reorganizations may occur.
  4. You will be contacted by your child(ren)’s new teacher on October 8 or 9 and your child(ren) will start in their new placement on October 13, 2020.

The next date to have your child move between learning environments is February 1, 2021. The final date for Elementary student moves back to in-school learning is March 22, 2021.

Lakehead Public Schools is guided first and foremost by the health and safety of our students and staff. After extensive consultation with the Ministry of Education and the Thunder Bay District Health Unit, we are committing to reduce the number of student to student, student to staff, and staff to staff contacts as we return to learning. As a result, all secondary schools will be moving forward with an Alternating Week Blended Learning Model for all students registered for in-class learning.

  • All students in grades 9-12 will attend school 5 days per week with normal class sizes
  • Students will take 2 courses per day: one in the morning and one in the afternoon
  • In order to limit the number of contacts students encounter at school, each course will be offered as a blended model – one week in person and one week virtually throughout the quadmester
  • In person classes will run every morning and virtual classes will run every afternoon
  • Students will be on a two week rotating schedule, attending one course in-person in the morning, and their second course virtually in the afternoon. In week 2, those courses would flip. For example, consider a student taking Mathematics and English. In week 1, they would receive instruction from the math teacher in-class, and English virtually online. In week 2, they would receive instruction from the English teacher in-class and from the math teacher online.
  • Students will be dismissed at 12:00 PM each day to either walk or take the bus home in time for the afternoon class online.

View a sample timetable here.
Download the Secondary School Calendar here.

Please note that while Quadmester 1 begins on September 3rd, students do not return to school until their indicated staggered start date:

September 8, 2020 – Students in Grades 9 and 11 ONLY
September 9, 2020 – Students in Grades 10 and 12 ONLY
September 10, 2020 – ALL STUDENTS

Students in special needs classes will begin school on September 8th and attend everyday thereafter. Students with special needs who are not in special needs classrooms attend with their grade.

More information about the Alternate Week Blended Learning Model will be communicated by your school. If you have any questions, please contact your school. Thank you for your patience as we work together to ensure the safety of all students, staff, and families as we return to learning.

This model does not affect those students registered for remote learning.

The following is based on information received from the Ministry of Education:

All students, K-12, will receive a June report card.

Elementary Students

For students in elementary school, teachers will assign tasks, projects and activities during the school closure period and provide meaningful feedback. Evidence of learning during the closure period may be taken in consideration when determining a final grade if it improves the student’s mark. Otherwise, students in Grades 1 to 8 will be assigned the grades earned based on their learning up until schools closed on March 13, 2020.

Secondary Students

For students in secondary school, teachers will assign tasks, projects and activities during the school closure period and provide feedback, assessment, and evaluation; however, this work will only be taken into consideration for final marks if it improves the student’s mark. If not, final marks submitted in June will reflect work completed by March 13, 2020. There will be no final exams for secondary students this semester.

It is essential to remind students to continue to stay engaged in their at home learning. Gaining the critical knowledge and skills to move on to the next level in their learning is of the utmost importance for all students.
